Learn Pottery on the Wheel – Beginners to Advanced
Our well-equipped pottery studio in the heart of Hillside at Chillaton offers inspiring pottery throwing lessons for all levels—from complete beginners to advanced throwers. With 4 large professional wheels and an informal, creative setting, our aim is to offer an affordable, hands-on introduction to pottery where you can relax, learn, and get messy with clay.
We offer both one-off taster sessions and 5-week throwing courses, which are flexible and tailored to your needs.
What to Expect During Our Wheel Throwing Lessons
Session 1 – Introduction to the Wheel
Wedging and preparing clay
Centering and throwing your first pot
You’ll create several pieces (up to 4 will be kept for trimming)
If this is a one-off session, we’ll trim and fire your pots for later collection
Session 2 – Trimming and Decoration
Learn to refine your pots and turn the bases
Add handles and experiment with decorative techniques (carving or slip design)
Session 3 – Developing Throwing Skills
Practice forming bowls and cylinders
Tips for shaping and consistency
Session 4 – Advanced Techniques
More trimming, turning, and surface decoration
Session 5 – Glazing
Glaze your finished pieces and prepare them for the final firing

Do I need to bring anything?
Just bring yourself! Tie back long hair, remove jewelry, and wear sensible footwear.
Is it safe?
Yes. We provide hard hats if needed (due to low beams), and seated wheel work is available.
