A Full-Day Glaze Technology Masterclass

Take a deeper step into the science and structure of ceramic glazes in this immersive one-day glaze chemistry masterclass.

This course is designed for potters and ceramic artists who want to understand how glazes truly work — moving beyond commercial products and developing the confidence to mix, adjust, and create glazes independently.

Through demonstrations and hands-on practical sessions, you will learn how raw materials interact, how glaze recipes are built, and how colour, texture, opacity, and surface quality can be controlled.

Starting with a reliable base glaze, you’ll experiment with colouring oxides, stains, opacifiers, and surface modifiers to create your own personalised glaze tests and recipes.

By the end of the day, you’ll leave with:

  • A strong understanding of glaze chemistry fundamentals
  • Your own glaze test samples
  • Confidence measuring and mixing glazes
  • Knowledge of material substitutions and glaze adjustment
  • Practical experience developing glaze surfaces from glossy to matt

All raw materials, tools, aprons, and firing are included.
A light lunch and refreshments are provided.

What You’ll Explore

  • Understanding glaze ingredients and their functions
  • Material substitutions and alternatives
  • Accurate measuring, mixing, and sieving techniques
  • Creating a reliable base glaze
  • Using oxides and stains for colour development
  • Understanding fluxes and surface behaviour
  • Adjusting opacity and sheen
  • Developing glossy, satin, and matt finishes
  • Health & safety for glaze materials

Hands-On Practical Sessions

You will:

  • Mix and sieve your own base glaze
  • Create personalised glaze variations
  • Experiment with colouring oxides and stains
  • Modify opacity and surface texture
  • Produce your own glaze test tiles

Sample tiles are provided, though participants are welcome to bring their own bisque-fired tiles made from their preferred clay body.

Test tiles will be fired in our electric kiln (200°C/h to 1230°C).
Photos of finished results will be sent afterwards, and samples may be collected, posted, or taken away for firing independently.
